The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that one of two lawyers who have been chosen to argue in favor of same-sex marriage rights before the United States Supreme Court in April has St. Louis ties.
Douglas Hallward-Driemeier, a former assistant U.S. solicitor general with the D.C. law firm of Ropes & Gray, is a
Florissant native and a 1985 graduate of McCluer North.
Florissant native and a 1985 graduate of McCluer North."My family has lived in north St. Louis and North County for the past 130 years, where the Driemeiers had a moving business that became part of United Van Lines," said Hallward-Driemeier, who was back in STL last week to visit his parents, Don and Joyce Driemeier.
"My dad was dean of the business school and later deputy chancellor at UMSL," he said, noting that his sister, Doni Driemeier-Showers, will graduate soon from Eden Theological Seminary.
"Perhaps most importantly, my family — including my wife and three sons — are huge St. Louis Cardinals fans," he said.
In the Supreme Court arguments set for April 28, Hallward-Driemeier will present the argument in favor of states respecting legal gay marriages performed in other states.
About the case, Hallward-Driemeier said: "These couples deserve the same respect and stability that states grant other married couples and their families throughout every phase of life."
