CHICAGO, IL – With Marriage Equality comes same-sex divorce. Deborah Mell, out Chicago City Councilwoman (D- 33rd Ward) and former Illinois State Representative (Chicago-40) announced the end of her marriage to Christin Baker via Twitter today.


The couple were married in Iowa in 2011.


“Dear Friends, It is with great sadness I tell you my marriage with Christin has ended. As you know divorce is painful, therefore we ask for privacy as we go through this process. Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Deb”


Mell is the daughter of long-time Alderman Richard Mell and her sister, Patti, is the former First Lady of Illinois (wife of Gov. Rod Blagojevich).


When Mell left the Illinois General Assembly, she was one of four openly LGBT members, along with Reps. Greg Harris, Kelly Cassidy and Sam Yingling, all Democrats.
