ST. LOUIS – State Rep. Mike Colona (D-St. Louis) kicked off his final reelection campaign to represent Missouri’s 80th district at Friendly’s Sports Bar & Grill in South City on June 11. The out legislator will be term limited in 2016.

While Missouri’s 80th is heavily Democratic, Colona will face opposition this November in Republican challenger Michael Huett.

“I’m confident we’ll win but Eric Cantor probably thought the same thing yesterday,” Colona told the room of supporters. “My mentor in politics told me that there’s two ways to run. You either run unopposed or you run scared. So I’m running scared.”

First elected to the Missoui House in 2008, Colona has been a strong supporter of organized labor and equality issues. Last session he introduced a bill to repeal Missouri’s ban on same-sex marriage.

If reelected, Colona will likely be the lone out member in the state legislature with the departure of term limited State Sen. Jolie Justus (D-Kansas City) this year.  In 2012 the LGBT caucus in Jefferson City had four members.
