ST. LOUIS - Steven Brawley, head of the St. Louis LGBT History Project has picked up checks for approximately $2,412 at Just John nightclub. The funds, which included an anonymous matching donation, were raised at the annual Bartender's Review held at JuJo on Jan. 18 where bartenders from area LGBT bars don drag and perform - many for the very first time.

The Bartender's Review was started at Faces nightclub in East St. Louis in the late 1980s by bartender Don Granda to raise money in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis decimating the LGBT community. The night of high camp and comedy stood in marked contrast to those dark days. The concept returned as a community fundraising effort when Just John brought the event back a few years ago.

The St. Louis LGBT History Project's mission is to preserve and promote the diverse and dynamic history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community of Greater St. Louis. What started out as a St. Louis LGBT History blog in 2007 has since turned into a mutli-pronged effort with a state of the art website and partnerships with the Missouri History Museum and the State Historical Society of Missouri.
