ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Pride St. Charles announced the date and location of its inaugural festival this week. The first St. Charles LGBT Pride celebration will take place on May 30, 2015 on the campus of St. Charles Community College from 12-6 p.m.

B.J. White, a SCCC employee and advisor to the college's SAGE (Straights and Gays for Equality) student group helped secure the location at little to no cost.

According to Pride St. Charles co-chair Jill Aul, SCCC is very supportive and excited about hosting the Pride event on their grounds.

Organizers have identified a location on campus adjacent to the library they feel is ideal for festival. The area has ample parking and is partially covered, an amphitheater style area for entertainment, a flat area for children’s activities, and a large, manicured green space with large sidewalks.

Pride St. Charles was formed in July when several members of the St. Charles chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays or PFLAG launched an effort to hold a pride event in their area.

“We feel the time has come for St. Charles to launch its own pride event, beginning next summer, in 2015,” Aul told #Boom. “Our county has several organizations, clubs and welcoming congregations whose participants are interested and excited about forming a local festival, where the LGBTQIA of St. Charles can be supported and included, without having to travel to downtown to do so.”

At its August meeting, Pride St. Charles formed various sub-committees and identified committee chairs to start planning festival. They have also reached out to other area Pride organizations for guidance.

The next Pride St. Charles meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Spencer Rd. library, Room 210. Community members interested in helping are encouraged to attend.
