ST. CHARLES, MO – Several members of the St. Charles chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays or PFLAG have launched an effort to hold a pride event in St. Charles in May 2015.

“We feel the time has come for St. Charles to launch its own pride event, beginning next summer, in 2015,” said St. Charles PFLAG President, Jill Aul. “Our county has several organizations, clubs and welcoming congregations whose participants are interested and excited about forming a local festival, where the LGBTQIA of St. Charles can be supported and included, without having to travel to downtown to do so.”

St. Charles PFLAG was formed 10 years ago and its members have participated in tabling at St. Louis PrideFest and marched in the Grand Parade.

“We certainly plan to continue participating in the St. Louis Pride Festival, but wish to plan a separate, local event that will cater to those who live nearby,” said Aul.

St. Charles currently has a chapter of Growing American Youth, a weekly LGBTQIA social support group for youth 21 and under and the county’s LGBT potluck group is thriving. Organizers also point to the several welcoming faith groups in St. Charles city and county, and to the several restaurants who participate in Dining Out for Life each spring as further proof of an engaged LGBT community.

The first planning meeting will take place on Thursday, July 31 at 7 p.m. at the Spencer Road Library, in room #210. Individuals and organizations interested in helping are encouraged to attend.
