ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Mr. Missouri Leather (MML), the state's oldest contest of its kind now celebrating 33 years of leathermen, will be held Feb. 26-28, 2016 at JJ's Clubhouse Annex in St. Louis (3858 Market St., 63110).
MML was founded by the now defunct Gateway M.C. in 1983 and was one of the longest running annual leather contests nationwide sponsored by a single leather club. In 2013, Terry Laupp and Chad Carroll of St. Louis Balloon Brigade fame took over the storied competition.
"This year's theme is 'Unity of Community,'" said Laupp, who captured the MML title in 2010. "Our goal is to be as all-inclusive among the different areas of the LGBT community, while building on the foundation and traditions of the Mr. Missouri Leather Competition."
The weekend will get underway with a “Meet and Greet” at JJ's Clubhouse on Friday night at 10 p.m. (no cover). for contestants, judges, supporters, and former and current title holders including MML 2015 Andy Struckhoff. Contestant numbers will be drawn at midnight following official introductions. The judges for MML will be announced at a later date.
A "Morning of Service and Fellowship" kicks off Saturday's events with a food pack at Food Outreach from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. (3117 Olive St., 63103). Contestant interview, which is closed to the public, immediately follows at Attitudes Nightclub (4100 Manchester Ave., 63110) at 1 p.m. Also on deck that day at JJ's Clubhouse is the free Mini Kink U hosted by the Titans of the Midwest from 1-4 p.m.
The festivities continue on Saturday night at 10 p.m. with the MML 2016 and Gateway Guy competition at JJ's Clubhouse ($10 cover.) There will also be a silent auction benefiting the MML Travel Fund with final bids being tallied at the contest's close.
MML contestants will be judged in the categories Cruise Wear, Physique & Personality, Formal Wear, as well as on their ability to deliver a short speech to the crowd. The new MML 2016 will receive sponsorship to International Mr. Leather 2016 in Chicago, $100, a title sash and much more. This year's runner-up will receive $100, with third place receiving $50.
The informal Gateway Guy contest, chosen by audience applause, has been a staple of the MML contest and strives to actively involve more people in the event while fostering interest in future contestants.
