Coordinated Youth and Human Services' Madison County AIDS Program (MadCAP), a Metro East based AIDS Service Organization (ASO), was recently chosen as one of two agencies in Illinois to pilot a rapid syphilis testing program.
The test is free and specific to men who have sex with men (MSM). Results are available within 10-15 minutes.SyphilisTest1
MadCAP outreach worker Garrett DeSherlia was chosen by the Illinois Department of Public Health to conduct testing locally because of his outreach and networking efforts within the LGBT and MSM communities.
"The STD rates in the St. Louis metro area have been among the highest in the U.S. for a few years now," said DeSherlia. "The only way to combat this is to continue to screen for these STDs and get patients treated as soon as possible to reduce transmission rates."
Located in Granite City, Ill., MadCAP serves clients in both Illinois and Missouri  providing walk-in HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and hepatitis-c testing with most results available within 20 minutes. The ASO provides free condoms, lubricants and other prevention materials in addition to working with clients who are HIV positive for case management, prevention and support groups.
"At MadCAP, we see lots of co-infection with HIV, hepatitis-c, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia," DeSherlia continued.  "Co-infection is very common because once someone is infected with one STD they are more susceptible to contract others."
