NEWS/WRITING INTERN

Editorial Department

  

#Boom Magazine is a St. Louis based news, advocacy and community publication serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) and Urban Progressive audience. This internship focuses on our online publication, offering an opportunity to learn all of the stages related to the production, writing and editing of various written materials.
  

Responsibilities:

 

This internship consists of editorial work, in particular copyediting, research and writing and working closely with the Editor and Publisher on various editorial projects. Responsibilities will entail a mix of administration and substantive work experience, including:

  

  • Researching/Writing news articles
  • Editing news content
  • Publishing content via Joomla platform
  • Reviewing and editing press releases
  • Identifying content
      

Qualifications:

 

  • Majors in journalism, communications, English, public relations or related fields preferred
  • Professional writing, editing, proofreading and communication skills
  • Strong copyediting skills, a very strong command of English spelling and grammar; experience with AP style preferred
  • General computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Joomla
  • Demonstrated interest in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues
  • Team player who is willing to pitch in and help out a definite plus — creativity welcome!
      

Outcomes:

 

  • Gain first-hand journalism experience in a deadline-driven environment covering an array timely news/political/color stories impacting the LGBTQ community
  • Increase professional writing, copyediting and editing skills
  • Expand understanding of issues and laws affecting the LGBT community

 

Other:

  

  • This is an unpaid internship. Credit is available upon request
  • As an all-digital publication, our interns can reside anywhere in the Midwest region; (you can work out of your home, the library or your local coffee shop.)
  • Weekly in-person or Skype progress meetings with Editor and Publisher

GRAPHIC/AUDIO/VIDEO DESIGN INTERN

  • Creating and editing video content
  • Creating and editing audio content
  • Site layout and design
  • Advertisement design and implementation
  • Collaboration with editorial department for article graphics, audio and video
  • Publishing content via Joomla platform
  • Identifying content
      

Qualifications:

 

  • You are majoring in graphic design, audio/video production or other applicable field at an accredited university or college.
  • You have at least 1 year experience.
  • You have experience working with Joomla
  • You are able to work independently.
  • Familiarity with Joomla
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or related design platforms
  • Experience with audio/video editing software

ADVERTISING SALES REPRESENTATIVE

Business Department

 

This commission-only Advertising Sales Representative position oversees the growth and revenue management of our advertising content for #Boom Magazine. You will be responsible selling advertising products on www.boom.lgbt. You will be expected to develop new and grow existing accounts through in person, and direct marketing email and telephone sales calls.​ As the Representative, you will earn a competitive commission on your personal sales and accounts.

 

The ideal candidate will possess a broad understanding of the news, issues and political and cultural climate of the LGBTQ community, in order to collaborate effectively with LGBT and LGBT-friendly clients.

 

Requirements:

 

- Minimum two years of advertising sales experience
- Proven success in selling within the online advertising space
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues and clients
- Excellent negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Self-starter with a drive to succeed and a passion for sales
- Confident personality, good at networking, with a collaborative approach
